sunday words: the starry field of excess and awe

“I know
there is a rocky ledge beyond which all things

fall away; the ground shudders beneath our beds
and we prick up like frightened ground squirrels

hearing a sound like the Southern Pacific about to derail
in the front yard. Now and then, one of us plunges

into the starry fields of excess and awe.”

–from the poem “California Coast” by Jean V. Gier

(with apologies to the author — I can’t get that “I know” indented over to the right hand margin as is should be)
